Alderman Ian Neilson is a civil engineer and politician with the Democratic Alliance who served as Deputy Mayor of Cape Town throughout the water crisis, having taken up the office on 27 May 2009. He previously served as the Mayoral Committee member for Finance from 2006, continuing through until 2016, and Executive Councillor for Safety and Health from 2000 until 2002. He served as acting Mayor of Cape Town on a few brief occasions. In January 2018 he was delegated to take overall responsibility for the City of Cape Town’s drought response. As a consulting engineer and prior to entering politics full-time, Ian specialised in large water projects and developed particular expertise in hydrology, pipeline design and pipe network planning.
